We have all the information you need on how to protect your plant babies during this upcoming snow/ice storm.

We all remember the cold we had during Christmas a few years back. Many plants were damaged or killed. In that case, the temps dropped so drastically so quickly that plants didn't have time to adjust.

Plants handle a steady drop in temperatures much better than a sudden drop. Our goal is to slow the rate of freezing and always protect the root system. By employing these steps below, you're doing everything you can to protect your plants during the ice and snow.

  1. Moisture holds heat better than dry soil. By watering the soil of your gardening beds, or where a new tree is planted (for example), the water helps protect its roots. Water the soil, but be sure not to get water on their foliage.

  2. Cover susceptible plants with frost cloths or old sheets. Stake them down if needed.

Susceptible plants include (but are not limited to):

    1. cold-sensitive plants (such as Camellia, Aucuba, Gardenia)

    2. newly planted trees and shrubs

    3. container potted plants

If you're unsure about whether to cover a specific plant, it won't hurt it to be covered, or feel free to call us and ask.

  1. Be sure to remove the cloths once the sun comes back out or the weather warms back up.

  1. Try to bring your pots inside your garage, basement, or home, if possible. Plants in pots are much more susceptible to the cold. If you cannot move them, water them well and cover them. If you can, also try to elevate them off the ground.

  2. Stake young trees. Ice can be hard on them and can cause damage.

  1. Add a fresh layer of mulch. We know you may not be able to do this before the winter weather comes in this weekend, but keeping 2-4" of mulch in your gardening beds helps insulate the roots and protect against snow and ice.

Winter weather looks like it's definitely on its way. Prepare and check on your loved ones and neighbors to see if they need anything before this winter weather arrives. Also, remember to make sure any outside pets will be warm and safe! Feel free to call us (615-468-2008) with any other questions about protecting your plants from ice and snow.
